Frister-Rossmann QE404 ~ oh yes!!!

Whoop whoop, my new sewing machine has arrived and it’s a beauty. I’ve spent a couple of hours reading and playing around before putting it away and carrying on with my form’s good luck cards.

Here it is. Just look at all those stitches! It makes me so happy :¬)

It came with a couple of freebies, both of which are surprisingly good quality. The set of scissors are great and just look at the colours of cotton that they’ve sent me. Perfect for a little embroidery I think.

Here’s some of the stitches that I’ve tried out so far…

I particularly like the programmable function that allows me to stitch words…

  1. Hiya - would you recommend this machine after having spent more time getting used to it? It's definitely on my short-list, I'm just trying to find reviews/opinions.
I'd be looking to use it for some light dress-making and beginners quilting.
    Thanks Lizzi x

  2. Hi Lizzi,

I've had no problems with it and I really think it was a bargain for the price I paid. It's easy to use and I've had great results. I am yet to try it for quilting but I have agreed to take control of costumes for my school's summer production this year and will be doing so entirely on this machine without any worries.

Hope this helps and that you eventually get the machine that's right for you.

  3. Hi Suzanne,

I'm really interested buying this model of sewing machine! But I have some doubts about the noise it makes, because I sewing until late. Is it a friendly sewing machine for the neighbors ?

    Thanks

    1. Hi Elsa,

I have to admit that it's not the quietest machine that I've ever used but I do use it in the same room as my husband and he doesn't complain about the noise. He does, however, grumble when I put the radio or TV on so it really can't be too bad!!

    1. Hi Melissa,

I'm afraid I am still yet to quilt with it but have been thrilled with it for every other project I have done, particularly for free machine embroidery. I find it very easy to use and could comfortably sit at it for hours. It has fed all fabrics and papers through very well. I'm still really pleased with it.

Sorry that I can't comment on the quilting aspect!

      Best wishes,

      Suzanne

Yes, a year on I still have no complaints about this machine. I really enjoy using it and find it quite user friendly.

  8. Dear Suzanne,
thanks for your quick answer. I am still waiting for the machine which I ordered in the UK. From what I see from the pictures it seems to be good for quilting. Have you already used it for quilting?
    Have a nice evening,
    greetings from Germany,

    1. I'm afraid that I'm still yet to use it for quilting. It's been good for free embroidery and patchwork though. It deals with thick fabric well and is easy enough to control.

  10. Hi, I bought this machine very recently and had the same problem. I presumed that the tensions would all be pretty much set when it arrived, but in my case they weren't. The bobbin tension needed to be very slightly adjusted, using the small screwdriver (supplied) and accessing the screw through the small hole (hidden by the accessories box). I adjusted mine by about 5 degrees to the right and it is now perfect. That sorted out my embroidery tension as well.

  11. Hi I am looking to buy this machine to embroider names onto garment and pillows. Can you change the size of the wording and is it neat?
    Thank you

    1. I really wouldn't recommend this machine with that specific purpose in mind. You can't change the size of the stitches or the font. You can only use capital letters and I'm not that keen on how it joins the letters together.

  12. Good Morning - I need a machine that does good button holes. This one has a great choice of buttonholes but are they any good? Thanks

  13. Wonder if you can help? I have just bought the same machine and its been working ok but today it just beeps when I try to sew. The display panel shows presser foot position is wrong but I don't know why. I have changed the foot twice without success. Any ideas? I can't make head or tails of the instruction book - it's written in English, but not as we know it! Lorraine Horsley

  15. Hi Suzanne, Great post! I am a newbie to the sewing world. I would like to purchase this machine QE404. Just wanted to know if you would recommend this for beginners like me? and also, can we do machine embroidery in this machine? I fail to see an embroidery ring in the accessories, please advice! Thank you for your time :)

    1. I bought this machine just about twelve months after I had begun machining and then I only used a very simple, cheap piece of equipment so I wasn't far from a beginner myself. I would definitely recommend it as long as you're prepared to play around with it and get used to it. It's fantastic for machine embroidery (see my first attempt at www.craftingwithsuzanne.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/crack-cocaine-of-craft-world.html) although you will need to buy your own embroidery ring and when you do I'd advise that get quite a big one to give you the freedom of movement you need. If you need help getting your machine sorted for doing machine embroidery just drop me a line and I'll do my best to explain it! Happy sewing...

  17. Hi Suzanne, I have bought this machine after reading your blog and other reviews, I am really looking forward to getting to grips with it. I am interested in quilting and embroidery and will certainly come back for any tips you can give me! Thanks so much! Pam

  18. Is the blue rubber thing a foot if so it is probably a button sewing foot used to sew buttons on with a zig zag stitch. It should tell you how to use it in the manual if not youtube will help.

  19. Hello Suzanne, I have just bought my machine over to Thailand where I now live, however, the Manual got lost in transit. Would you, or one of your readers, have the Manual for the QE404 in English that could be scanned and uploaded. I have looked at websites that say the are selling the manual - but it is just the Quick Setup Guide and not the full manual. Cheers, Thomas

  22. Hello Suzanne,

I know I'm in 2021, I got this sewing machine as a heirloom, and I'm new to it. Unfortunately the instructions are in English and I do not understand anything in that language (I apologize but that does not want to enter my brain). Where can I find all the free French instructions?

    Thanking you in advance

Hope to hear from you very soon
